Description

A fabulously expressive pair of vintage Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls, hand-painted in complementary traditional dress and preserved as an original couple.

Turned from wood, each figure features a softly matte finish, a beautifully restrained face, and a positionable head that can be gently turned. Their painted robes combine vibrant geometric patterning with small floral details in red, blue, turquoise, white, and black. She wears an elaborate red hair ornament; he retains many rather magnificent wisps of fiber hair.

Likely produced in Japan during the mid-20th century for the export market, the pair has the graphic simplicity associated with kokeshi while incorporating unusually playful, dimensional details. Their complementary designs and quietly distinct personalities make them especially delightful displayed together.

Both retain stamped “MADE IN JAPAN” marks on the underside.

Sold together as a pair.

He measures approximately 4” high; she measures approximately 4.5” high. Each is approximately 2” wide at the base.

Very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear, scattered rubbing, and small areas of paint loss consistent with age and use. The hand-painted decoration remains vivid and the delicate applied details, including that fiber hair(!) and her dimensional hair ornament, remain intact. Both heads rotate for positioning.
