Description

A joyful vintage wooden box, handcrafted and hand-painted in the distinctive folk-art tradition of La Palma, El Salvador.

The box creates a small world across its surfaces. A brilliantly colored bird stands among white village houses, red-tiled roofs, flowering trees, and rolling pink hills on the front, while the generously overhanging lid presents a second, more expansive landscape populated by another bird, a rooster, a dog, and a village.

Developed in La Palma during the 1970s, this distinctive visual language was popularized by Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort and the community of artisans who worked around him. Its flat fields of saturated color, emphatic black outlines, simplified animals, and scenes of communal life transformed locally made wooden objects into exuberant works of folk art.

The partially legible ink stamp on the underside reads “HECHO A MANO” and “CARVED AND PAINTED BY HAND.”

The hinged lid opens to reveal a simple, spacious wooden interior. Beautiful as decorative storage for letters, keepsakes, jewelry, or other small treasures. The box is expressive and lovely simply as a display piece.

Dimensions:

• Box: approximately 7” W × 7” D × 4” H

• Lid: approximately 7.5” square

Very good vintage condition with gentle surface wear, small scratches, and minor irregularities consistent with age and handmade construction. The underside stamp is worn but partially legible. Please review all photographs, which form part of the condition description.
