Vintage Hand-Carved Sosaku Japanese Kokeshi Doll

A beautiful example of the Japanese Sosaku, or Creative Kokeshi, movement, this hand-carved wooden doll balances quiet simplicity with remarkable craftsmanship.

The doll features a sleek black bob hairstyle, delicately painted closed eyes, and a subtle red mouth. Deeply carved floral motifs emerge from a textured indigo-gray kimono, accented by a richly detailed red obi with traditional lattice decoration.

Unlike traditional regional kokeshi forms, Sosaku kokeshi were created as individual artistic expressions, allowing artisans greater freedom in design, carving, and decoration. This example reflects that spirit, combining sculptural form with intricate surface work.

Signed to the base with the artist’s chop/seal.
