Description
A signed Japanese sōsaku (creative) kokeshi by Kazuo Takamizawa, executed in turned and hand-painted wood.
This mid-century example reflects the postwar studio kokeshi movement, in which individual artists moved beyond regional folk patterns toward more personal, sculptural interpretations. The form is softly tapered, crowned with a bold black coiffure and red topknot. The body is rendered in a vivid red ground with delicate, hand-painted floral motifs, creating a compelling contrast between graphic clarity and warmth.
The simplified facial expression and balanced proportions give the piece a quiet modern presence suited to curated interiors, bookshelves, or layered object groupings.
Signed on the underside with the artist’s seal.
