Description
Antique hand-colored botanical engraving from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine, published June 1,1806.
Depicting Phytolacca decandra (Virginian poke), this finely detailed copperplate engraving was drawn by Sydenham Edwards and engraved by F. Sansom, after the original publication by William Curtis in London. Verso retains original book page, consistent with early Curtis Botanical Magazine engravings.
The composition balances delicate blossoms with deep purple berries and a single sculptural leaf. This botanical study is rendered with clarity, restraint, and quiet visual structure. The original hand-coloring remains soft and nuanced, with gentle age toning that reflects its early 19th-century origin.
Presented in a classic, layered mat with hand-lined detailing and a dark wood frame with subtle gilt accent. A refined, ready-to-hang piece suited to both traditional interiors and more minimal, layered spaces.
