Description
An original late-18th century hand-colored botanical engraving depicting Drosera rotundifolia, the round-leaf sundew, a small carnivorous plant known for its delicate, tentacle-like leaves.
The plate was engraved by Johann Stephan Capieux in 1798 and produced for the botanical volumes associated with the work of the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, part of the monumental Enlightenment-era natural history project Tableau Encyclopédique et Méthodique des Trois Règnes de la Nature.
Rendered in copperplate engraving and delicately hand colored, the illustration presents the plant alongside finely detailed anatomical studies of its reproductive structures and seeds. These scientific plates were created to document plant morphology with remarkable precision and remain prized today for both their artistry and their role in early botanical science.
The sundew’s distinctive form; radiating leaves tipped with fine glandular hairs, makes this plate especially compelling among 18th-century botanicals.
